our philosophy... Housing First
Housing First is a strategy that quickly places people who are homeless into stable, appropriate, permanent housing. This approach provides life skill coaching and linkages to community services; and thus assists people to retain housing, to achieve maximum self-sufficiency, and to integrate into the community.
Housing First has two underlying premises:
- Re-housing is the central goal
- Housing assistance and life skill coaching reduces the time people spend in homelessness.
Housing First consists of the following components:
- Crisis intervention, emergency services, screening and needs assessment
Addresses needs like stabilization of benefits, documentation, etc.
- Permanent Supportive housing
Identifies affordable units, accesses housing subsidies, negotiates leases and overcomes barriers such as poor tenant history, credit history, etc.
Ensures individuals and families have a source of income through employment and/or public benefits; identifies service needs, works with families for housing and economic stability.
Housing First emphasizes :
- Individuals and families first and foremost need housing to stabilize. Once stabilized they can address issues in their lives.
- The goal of life skills coaching is to help individuals and families access housing and ensure retention of housing.
- Services are transitional. The goal is to link to mainstream services and withdraw agency services.
We believe in providing Housing First to end homelessness.
